Extreme Heat

There's hot, and then there's HOT! Extreme heat is a period of high heat and humidity with temperatures above 90 degrees for at least two or three days. The kind of temperature we've experienced lately. In extreme heat your body works extra hard to maintain a normal temperature. Older adults, young children, and sick or overweight individuals are at greater risk from extreme heat. Humidity increases the feeling of heat. The most common cause of fatigue in the summer is DEHYDRATION! Be sure to drink more water even if you don't feel thirsty.

In your efforts to stay cool, stay in the air-conditioning! If air conditioning is not available, go to a cooling center especially between the hours of 12 to 5 pm. The RB Library and RB Recreational Center are official Cool Zones. However, movie theaters and grocery/drug stores amongst many other businesses are cooled. Maybe you could make arrangements to visit a friend with air conditioning. At home, take cool showers or baths, wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing. Put cool compresses on your neck. Do not use your oven. Check on the safety of family members, seniors, and neighbors. Watch a movie or TV show with snow in it. Consider pet safety. If they are outside, make sure they have plenty of cool water and access to comfortable shade. Asphalt and dark pavement can be very hot on a pet's feet. Never leave people or pets in a closed car on a warm day.
